Notes:
I walked to the side of the trail to see if the blackberry vines had any ripe blackberries, and I heard this snake's rattle. I tried to take a picture, but my memory was full (why did it happen at the most inopportune time?) So I backed up a couple yards, deleted some old pictures, and went back to the spot where I originally saw the snake. It was still there and still coiled.
I couldn't see it's markings very well because of the dense shrubbery. It's head was triangular in shape with large white spots behind the ears. It looked mostly gray. I could see the rattle. I'm guessing it's a northern pacific rattler, because I don't know of any other rattlesnake in this area.
