Notes:
One Valley and Ridge Salamander seen under a small deciduous log amid a mixed forest slope in the Western Virginia Alleghenies. It only took three logs to find the creature, which at first looked to be a lead-backed phase Red-backed. When I picked it up, however, it became obvious that the salamander had a tail much longer than its body, a different belly pattern than the typical red-back salamander, and more costal grooves. This is my first Valley and Ridge, found as the light green dogwoods started blooming in Old Dominion's mountains. Habitat shot included in vouchers.
