Notes:
The salamander was found under a small rock in the middle of the small creek bed (see third photograph for in situ shot), which was mostly dry, but still held some small pools of barely flowing water at the mouth of the canyon.
The narrow canyon is mostly vegetated with oak and sycamore trees, and the spot where the salamander was found is almost completely shaded the entire day.
This may be the first Ensatina E. from the Verdugo Mountains that has been recorded in recent times. A database search performed on HerpNet by herpetologist Greg Pauly of the Natural History Museum produced no Ensatina E. records - with lat/long data - for the Verdugo Mountains. I.e., there may be older records without lat/long data. By comparison, the same search did produce 54 Batrachoseps nigriventris records.
